Garnier's Becket

Translation, introduction and notes by Janet Shirley
This is a prose translation of La Vie Saint Thomas de Cantorbire, a verse biography of the saint by Guernes de Pont-Ste-Maxence. The original is a vivid work, written within a short time of Becket's death in 1170. Guernes or Garnier visited England and interviewed people who had seen events at first hand, including Becket's sister Mary, abbess of Barking, who gave him a good little horse and all the trappings, even including spurs. Her ladies were kind and hospitable, he rides away from them quite fat.
